Chico Buarque debuts on tour in Rio and enjoys songs from different eras

Alongside Mônica Salmaso, the artist presents the show ‘Que Tal um Samba?’ to the busy Vivo Rio; all 16 concerts scheduled in the city are sold out

River – Chico Burque a few steps and that characteristic smile of his were enough to make more than three thousand people burst into applause on the night of this Thursday the 5th. Monica Salmaso she had already performed six songs from the show How about a Samba?, the new tour of the 78-year-old musician. He made his debut last year and has now arrived for a run of 16 appearances in Rio, all of which were regularly sold out. In São Paulo, the tour arrives on March 2, at the Tokio Marine Hall.

After taking the stage, Chico sang nearly 30 compositions, solo, duet or with the audience. And he made the rainy night in Rio a soul-washing presentation.

At Chico’s show, the audience was also tuned up. With the exception of one nag who insisted on shouting something at the end of each song, the audience seemed to be fully integrated into the stage, singing along, snapping their fingers or clapping their hands rhythmically. He also vibrated when the artist made a mistake at the beginning of the song and apologized by drinking water.

Through it all, of course, he was quite comfortable with his flawless band. Standing, sitting, playing the guitar or just whistling, Chico Buarque was the old francis – in fact, the first song chosen to perform alongside Mônica. She sang works from different periods of her career and paid tribute to artists who have already left us, such as the girl likes it and the sister Miucha.

Divided into three parts, the show started without Chico on stage. Mônica Salmaso opened the show singing and enchanting with All togethermusic that is part of children’s play The Mummers, whose Brazilian version has songs by Chico. The singer appeared to the audience from the seventh chosen composition and she sang along with Mônica four more. Subsequently, Chico Buarque performed 18 more solo songs before returning to duet.

The political question that has always accompanied the artist’s career could not be missing, but in this Thursday’s exhibition it appeared in a more subtle way. “I was thinking of putting a hunchback in front of me, but then they said I can’t sing the lyrics and that I haven’t written my songs,” the artist quipped in a short speech to the audience in the middle of the show. Last year, a judge even asked for proof that the famous Living wheel, a song composed by Chico, was in fact his. The surprising request had to do with a lawsuit he filed over the misuse of music by one of the former president’s sons.

The names of those involved are not worth mentioning because neither Chico Buarque, nor Mônica Salmaso, nor the audience mentioned them during the more than 90 minutes of the show. How about a Samba? it was essentially music. And, like in the old days, Chico Buarque’s message was already in the lyrics, especially in the one that gave the tour its name.
