In the Artist of the Year category, BRIT Awards nominated only men

Sam Smith issued its opinion on the controversial nominations of the BRIT Awards 2023. After extinguishing categories separated by gender – a measure praised by the community – the award indicated only men in the main category of the event.

Central Cee, Fred Again.., George Ezra, Harry Styles and stormzy compete for the award of Artist of the Year. The list without women representatives comes just two years after the change in the regulation of the BRIT Awards.

Smithwho is a non-binary person, said in an interview with the newspaper sunday times (via NME) that the list is an “embarrassment”: “Things are moving forward, but obviously we’re not there yet. Seeing this list of Artist of the YearI realize we still have a long way to go.”

“It’s incredibly frustrating. It should be easy. BRIT Awards needs to celebrate everyone, because this isn’t just about artists winning awards. The awards are for the kids watching it on TV and thinking, ‘I can make music like this.'” she continued.

The musician Tim Burgess also contested the British ceremony on Twitter after the announcement of the nominees: “The BRIT Awards introduced the category Artist of the Year as a gender-neutral replacement for categories of Best Female Artist and Best Male Artist. This year, however, the five nominees are men. One step forward, three steps back.”
