Vocalist leads Paramore, one of the most celebrated bands of the nostalgia movement, but it wasn’t always like this

Nostalgia for pop punk and emo nearly two decades after their heyday has caused many bands to embrace the subgenre again. It is not the case of Paramorewho promises to make a sound that is nothing like a “flashback” on his new album, This is Whyto be released next February.

In an interview with billboard, the vocalist hayley williams reflected on how the return of the pop punk/emo movement to the mainstream can bring some problems. Although his group has shared the stage with artists like My Chemical Romance, Alkaline Trio and Jimmy Eat World in recent times, the singer has adopted a critical stance in relation to the way her art is currently seen.

“We don’t want to be a nostalgic band, but I think what I felt (playing at nostalgic events) was a mixture of revenge and also a lot of anger. It was like, ‘Wait a minute, they’re treating us like a prize now.

The artist highlighted that when her band was emerging, it was a constant target of sexist comments and baseless criticism. One of them came from an idol in the segment: fat mike vocalist and bassist of NOFX.

fat mike I used to tell people that I practiced anilingualism (a sexual act that consists of stimulating the partner’s anus with the tongue or mouth) on stage when I was 19 years old. I don’t think this is a punk thing. I don’t think that’s the essence of punk. I feel strongly that without young women, people of other races and the queer community, I think we would still be where we were before.”

Finally, Hayley reflected on how fans hold the power to turn nostalgia into something more interesting.

“We stayed with the My Chemical Romance a few minutes before we play and I think they feel the same way about how they were received then and now. The fans are the ones with the power because otherwise we and My Chemical Romance we wouldn’t be where we are. This is beautiful.”

Hayley Williams and the “Good Times”

the reflection of hayley williams is similar to what she shared during the festival When We Were Young, precisely one of the biggest events to add nostalgia for pop punk and emo in the United States. The show was held in Las Vegas last October. In the midst of her presentation, she declared:

“Everyone is just trying to remember the ‘good times’ and I’m sitting there thinking, ‘The good times weren’t so good.’ […] It wasn’t welcoming at all if you were different, if you were a young woman, if you were of another race, if you were queer. And that’s really f#da if you think about it, because it’s supposed to be a safe place, isn’t it?”
