Sex, drugs and freedom: Pabllo Vittar loses shame in new album [ENTREVISTA]

With a nocturnal and electronic feel, the singer’s fifth album brings, this Wednesday (8), her most sensual and libertarian side so far

Sex, drugs, free speech. Pablo Vittar is back and more explicit than ever. night outhis fifth studio album, arrives this Wednesday (8) with Pabllo’s most punk attitude so far.

Pabllo Vittar: Noitada (Gabriel Renne/Disclosure)

if in tropical beat (2021) the drag superstar used the affective memory of childhood rhythms between Pará and Maranhão, in night out it leads into an almost literal party, explicit already in the order of each of the disc’s 11 tracks. And, if in content this change comes with the libertarian theme, in form it comes with a foot in the club.

“I’ve always been to several techno parties and it’s something that seems to be very far from the pop universe, but for me it’s not”, said the singer in an interview with Rolling Stone Brazil.

Pabllo, who had already announced at the end of last year that the new material would be more ‘nocturnal’, now complements it with other references he brings to the album:

“We cannot forget that it is a night album, but we are in the summer. So I wanted to bring this sample of Summer Eletrohits, this vibe synth pop with funk, with dance music, house… all the elements that remind me to festival night parties.”

From pop sadness to explicit electro

Fruit of an intense year of work alongside names like the producers Rodrigo Gorky It is ZebyNoitada started as a different proposal for Pabllo, who imagined a more emotional bias for the new album: “I was feeling really sad, so sad things were coming out, right? A more sadness pop vibe – which was pretty cool too”.

“Noitada emerged in this post-pandemic transition, where I was able to go out again and perform again, meet new people, rebuild old ties, and so I was freeing myself and the album was born.”

With a heavier musicality and techno ambience, Noitada is an effective album, in the sense of showing a more explicit side of Pabllo, a climate already anticipated in “DESCONTROLADA”, with MC Caroland “Ameianoite”, with Gloria Groove, but which expands into moments like “Melted” and “Appetizing”. On the new album, he doesn’t skimp on poetry, he includes swear words and that dirty laugh that those who know, know. If the old Pabllo already bothered a lot of people, the new Pabllo will bother even more.

Additional disc partnerships include DJ Rammes, chelinho It is DJ Tonias. Two highlights are due to The Kannalha, who appears in “Penetra”, and, of course, by Anitta, who joins Pabllo in the interlude “Calma Amiga” and lends vocals to “Balinha de Coração”. Far from emulating the formula of “Sua Cara”, a mega celebrated feat by the duo with major leisurethe new headband successfully fulfills the function of sticking to the head:

“I think that [“Balinha de Coração”] tells a very, very cool story of friendship and an outbreak, because every time we meet it is an outbreak”.

Between the past and the future

An “outbreak”, yes, that extends to the rest of night out. But a calculated and cosmopolitan surge, which reflects the moment of Pabllo’s recovery – still in 2023, she goes on a tour of Australia, in addition to promoting her Carnival block and expanding her Halloween benefit party.

night outin that sense, it looks like a party that celebrates Pabllo’s own artistic maturity – an artist who, it is worth remembering, has been growing since 2016, accumulating hits with varied and regional influences, in a country hostile to the LGBTQIA+ creator.

And if ‘Pabllo Root’ fans fit into this party – who will meet in moments like “Culpa do Cupido” -, she also brings her other side to the wheel, more sensual, free and experimental. Pabllo’s party is nothing out of control, which goes from the intro to “After” without forgetting any fan.

Rolling Stone Brazil: Pabllo, the name itself already says: night out it’s a night album. But beyond that, what else do you bring to the mix? I saw that you used a Magic Box sample in “Apetitosa”, something like Summer Electrohits… what else do you bring to this record?

Pablo Vittar: Ah, many things, right? We cannot forget that it is a night album, but we are in the summer. So bring this sample of Summer Eletrohits, this vibe synth pop with funk, with dance music, house… all the elements that remind me of festival night parties. It was a big, big lab that I had to do. I went to friends’ parties, I felt sensations… and on this album I’m also bringing several other themes like sex, drugs, freedom of expression, so it’s pretty cool.

Rolling Stone Brasil: We’ve already seen its pop, axé, brega, even gospel side, and now we’re seeing this techno well marked in time. How is your experience in this genre and what references appear here?

Pablo Vittar: Look, I’ve always been to several techno parties and it’s something that seems to be very far from the pop universe, but for me it’s not. They are usually night parties, underground parties, with people who feel free to wear what they want, to be what they want, it’s very special. So there’s a lot of that, you can see from the cover that I represent a fallen angel, who fell into the night to enjoy that night, so there are several references. And the album also tells this storytelling, if you read the tracklist a story from beginning to end.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Talking about the production now, you already said that on this album you were going the other way, but that the album evolved into what ended up coming out. What path is this and how has it changed?

Pablo Vittar: We started working on this record a while ago. And I was feeling very sad, I was close to reducing that pandemic. So sad things were coming out, right? The album was going for a more sadness pop vibe – which was pretty cool too. But noitada noitada emerged in this post-pandemic transition, where I was able to go out again and perform again, meet new people, redo old ties, and so I was freeing myself and it was born night out

Rolling Stone Brasil: And what happened to the other compositions, do they exist, are they going to be released?

Pablo Vittar: And you think we would delete it? “Guys, burn everything!” [risos] They are stored somewhere. Who knows, one day, 50 years from now.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Another thing that we also saw there in the edition of the album was that you decided to put partnerships in a prominent role on this album, more than on others, right? How was the decision for these partners, and to give all this importance?

Pablo Vittar: Oh, because people out there are used to doing this, you know, bringing feats to a more prominent role. Here in Brazil we still walk in this canned form, that the person starts, then the feat has its space in the middle of the song, sings the chorus together and ends. So, when we manage to break this thing, I already did it. And it was really cool, because we brought a lot of people we hadn’t worked with, producers too, there’s Kannalha, Tchelinho, there’s DJ Ramemes, DJ Tonias… angryit was really cool, it added a lot.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Speaking specifically of Anitta, this is a partnership that people can’t overcome, they ask for more, they ask for an encore… how is this relationship between you two?

Pablo Vittar: We talk a lot. I asked her to participate in this project last year and nothing was ready yet. I said: ‘mona, when I have a breath I’ll send you and then we’ll exchange ideas’. And then came “Calma Amiga”, which became an interlude, which is a very funny story those audios there, but then came “Balinha de Coração” so we could share the vocals. And I think it tells a really cool story of friendship and an outbreak, because every time we meet it’s an outbreak. I am very honored to have her in this job.

Rolling Stone Brasil: You started releasing the record there on Halloween and when you saw it, it was already here, man, Carnaval. Speaking of your expectations, which track do you believe will be popular at parties, in blocks, among your fans?

Pablo Vittar: Oh, carnival block, the way mine are naughty, they’re all going to burst. “Descontrolada” already plays a lot, which was the opening of the album… “Ameianoite” also plays a lot. “Cupid’s fault” they’ll scream at the top of their lungs, I’m sure. But you can’t talk. I think everyone who listens will have a perception, you know?

Rolling Stone Brazil: No bets?

Pablo Vittar: I like the album as a whole, it’s a baby, just out of the oven. I can’t listen to just one, when I listen, I listen to it from the beginning, from the intro to “After”.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Speaking of visuals, how do you intend to work on the album conceptually from now on? We already have two videos released along with the songs we already know…

Pablo Vittar: Yes yes. That’s why the opinion of the fans is very important. We’re going to release the album, we’re going to let them digest the album, we’re going to see what they think, and then we’re going to do something. I’m not going to shove a single down their throat and say ‘this is it, this is the single, let’s go’. No, I need to know what they think, you know? So we’re doing it in this very organic way, the way I’m working now.

Rolling Stone Brasil: Finally, Gorky, your producer, commented that “After” already points to a future for Pabllo. We know you haven’t even left yet. night outbut I wanted to know if you can already see what’s on the horizon, a next project…?

Pablo Vittar: My sixth album, which we are already working on. But I won’t say anything, now it’s time to night outwhich hasn’t even come out yet.
