‘The triangle of sadness’, the new film by Ruben Östlund and Palme d’Or winner at Cannes, stars in our controversy of the month, which side are you on?
In favor, by Desirée de Fez
In line with Ruben Öslund’s previous work (‘The Square’), ‘The Triangle of Sadness’ is the best recent manifestation of a current trend (although he has always practiced it): the sharp, black humor-saturated satire of the world of the rich.
The worst: it is divided into three parts and not all of them are equally good.
This comedy is infinitely more inspired, original and radical than the HBO series ‘The White Lotus’. That would be reason enough to embrace it, but there are others: a brilliant first act (the elevator scene is high comedy); the impudence with which Östlund desacralizes auteur cinema (let’s not forget that he has won two Palme d’Ors) with a crescendo eschatological, and a magnificent last part as a study/parody of the reality.
Against, by Mariona Borrull
Ruben Östlund fortifies the simple cruelty of ‘The triangle of sadness’ behind boutades that call into question our very capacity for judgment.
The best: dancing to the sound of ‘Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)’.
Its protagonist, a model woke and donkey, you sure have a zero sense of humor, right? When they take him out of his boxes, He will be the first to fall headlong into the contradictions. Same as Östlund, who believes he is most lucid in ‘discovering’ human fallibility in yet another ‘Lord of the Flies’, claiming to know how to laugh at himself while questioning us like any donkey in a Facebook discussion: “You would too! ” barking dog
