Criticism of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, the best film in James Gunn’s trilogy and a triumph for Marvel

For those who have been disenchanted with Marvel and want to believe again: the third installment of Guardians of the Galaxy hits all the right keys and raises the bar for Phase 5.

How much the Marvel Cinematic Universe (UCM) is going to miss James Gunn and his Guardians of the Galaxy. The latest installment in the trilogy, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’, is a display of intense action, absurd sense of humor, aesthetics camp loaded with light and color, sufficiently contained Marvel references and emotions on the surface with some of the most heartbreaking scenes in the entire franchise. It’s a movie about the meaning of home, second chances, and the importance of chosen families; it is a treatise against animal abuse and a critique of megalomaniac ambition; and it is also a delirious sci-fi adventure that is not afraid to look at in ‘Barbarella’ (Roger Vadim, 1968) while giving Marvel’s most likeable superheroes their moment to shine.

After Thor abandoned the idea of the Asgardians of the Galaxy to live his own adventures in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ (Taika Waititi, 2022) and we discovered the meaning of Christmas with Kevin Bacon in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy: Special Christmas’ (James Gunn, 2022) on Disney+, we meet the Guardians in Knowhere. Between Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) crying over his love problems and the hilarious give-and-take between Kraglin (Sean Gunn) and the space dog Cosmo (Maria Bakalova), life goes smoothly on this space station that now call home. However, The peace is disturbed by a brutal attack that leads Star-Lord, Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Plom Klementieff), Groot (Vin Diesel) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) to race against time to save Rocket ( Bradley Cooper).

Gunn shows real affection for these characters, especially Rocket, whose origins lie at the heart of the story. The flashbacks to the character’s past are among the most heartbreaking and shocking scenes in the saga, it is the origin of his traumas, but there is also love, friendship and longing. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is practically a love letter to Marvel’s cranky raccoon, and, by extension, to all those who feel marginalized, different or imperfect. Use Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ as the first track in its always amazing playlist of songs it is quite a declaration of intent. And having a villain like the High Evolutionary (Chukwudi Iwuji), obsessed with creating a master race with which to achieve the perfect society at any cost, is the perfect vehicle to explore the messages of the film. Too bad the character is as one-dimensional as most of the MCU antagonists. Who also has a bittersweet presence in the film is Adam Warlock (Will Poulter), an essential character in the Marvel comics who finally jumps to the big screen, although he does so only as one more comic relief of the function.

Despite these details, and also a sometimes self-defeating desire to try to cover more than it can or needs, the third installment of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is a triumph for Marvel at a time of collective disappointment. After starting Phase 5 on the wrong foot with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ (Peyton Reed, 2023), which took Ant-Man out of his fun adventures in San Francisco to use him as a bridge to the multiverse, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ reminds us how effective it is to have an author with vision, daring and love for his characters under the Marvel umbrella. What James Gunn delivers is a classic Guardians movie, with its epic slow-motion walks, alien creatures of all sizes and colors, cathartic dance moves, and goofy sense of humor. It is a closure of the trilogy as consistent as it is satisfying.
