The new film by Miguel Ángel Vivas, ‘Siege’, works as a metaphor for the corrupt, the authoritarian, the violent and, above all, fear.
Miguel Ángel Vivas (‘Vivir sin permiso’) subjects Natalia de Molina to torture, leaving her trapped in a building with a group of policemen (her own colleagues) ready to finish her off after discovering a corrupt plot and witnessing a murder. The movie starts with a fast-paced dynamic like a video game: sequence shots of the character, from which the camera does not separate, going up and down stairs, going in and out of rooms, dodging enemies and stumbling. Behind her, ‘the bad guys’, who appear deliberately out of frame, from behind or directly out of focus, function as metaphor of the corrupt, the authoritarian, the violent and, above all, fear. The resource of blurring the characters that surround her fulfills her mission, but leaves the protagonist helpless when it comes to composing her different layers.
The obsession with keeping the adrenaline pumping takes us away from the plot and, above all, from the internal process of a woman in which we glimpse a conflict over whether being a police officer means working for those above or below. Also a growing empathy for the immigrants she has just evicted from their homes. But we only glimpsed it.
