The director of ‘Libertad’ has co-written the Lebanese film directed by Mounia Akl.
In her first feature film as a director, Mounia Akl returns to the motif of a family in search of their own utopia far from the world, in the manner of films such as ‘The Mosquito Coast’ or ‘Captain Fantastic’. Installed in a small self-sufficient Eden on the outskirts of Beirut, the Badri see their way of life threatened by the expansion of literal and metaphorical toxic waste coming from the city. With a script written together with Clara Roquet, Akl combines a very balanced family drama with the X-ray of the contradictions that drag a resistant company of this type. Each character receives personalized attention while the patriarchal inertias that drag these projects emerge, the dark side of the isolationist will and the difficulties of resisting alone the attacks of a predatory global capitalism. With two of the most charismatic presences in Arab cinema, director Nadine Labaki and Saleh Bakri, leading the cast, Costa Brava, Lebanon It connects from the ecological conscience with a tradition of political cinema more reflective than combative.
For viewers open to intelligent humor served without complications
The best: a colossal Francesc Orella, in a state of grace.
The worst: the refusal to delve into black humor and bad blood.
