Criticism of ‘A good person’, the new Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman

Zach Braff signs his most intimately personal work, a story he wrote for his then partner Florence Pugh that is born from pain and loss to look, with hope, to the future.

Zach Braff has never quite lived up to the expectations he aroused with the visual inventiveness and charm of his directorial debut, ‘Something In Common’ (2004), but with ‘A Good Person’ he comes closer than ever. Perhaps it is the result of his creative maturity, or perhaps it was due to having a muse like Florence Pugh –who inspired the script when the two were a sentimental couple– and the dedication of a veteran like Morgan Freeman, hungry at 85 for roles with substance. .

Adhering to a film-therapy trend supported by bombastic vital lessons, the film follows the pattern of the drama of addictions and existential crises without questioning it too much. Still, Braff gets enough insights, especially its touches of comedy and his reflection on guilt and second chances that stem from the story’s central tragedy. Despite falling into certain clichés, ‘A Good Person’ manages to find moments of genuine emotion in its desperate search for the meaning behind its title: what does it mean to be a decent human being when the smallest of our faults can have catastrophic consequences.

For those who want an easy but satisfying tear

The worst: his insistence on going through commonplaces of existential drama.
