The actress plays a retired doctor who travels as a volunteer to a Greek refugee camp.
In her first film, ‘María (y los otros)’, Nely Reguera focused on a female character who, for various reasons, settled in early in the crisis of her 40s. The feeling of bewilderment in the face of stage changes is also present here, in which a recently retired woman feels the need to feel useful so as not to fall apart.
‘The volunteer’ talks about how personal and collective fragility are confused and it does so by questioning the bases that support the bad conscience of the First World in the face of the problems of the Third. We can all identify with its protagonist, Marisa (Carmen Machi, dazzling), especially if we have a minimum of social sensitivity. Through it we feel the weight of contradictions, the complexity of a conflict that surpasses us and that good intentions, sometimes, are more selfish than saving spirit. A film that immerses us in the reality of a real refugee camp to confront without discursive desire a dark and bright panorama, in which there is misery, but also hope.
For those who want to approach a film with a message and humanity
The best: Carmen Machi.
The worst: that in the end the focus is always on us.
