Review of ‘Midnight Sky’

George Clooney stars in and directs this icy dystopia based on the post-apocalyptic world of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s book.

On diaphanous frames, in whose silence tragedy is chewed, the limping figure of Augustine emerges, a dying scientist whose agony is matched by the rattles of planet Earth, who in the year 2049 says enough, tired of enduring the insolence of our species . In this adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s environmentalist novel of the same name, George Clooney not only takes on directing duties but also gives his aging features to Augustine. He was a wise decision, if we consider the way he midnight sky capitalize the shock what does it mean to see the other sex symbols transmuted into a face and a body traversed by the yoke of time. Turned into a twilight figure worthy of Clint Eastwood’s cinema, Clooney wanders, along with a mysterious girl, through a film that courageously and successfully tackles the challenge of invoking genuine anguish in the viewer in the face of a chillingly possible apocalypse.. This critic did not feel a similar discomfort before the representation of the end of our world from the Melancholia (2011) by Lars von Trier.

That said, the problems midnight sky they have to do with a certain accumulation of narrative veins. The odyssey of Clooney’s characters and the girl evokes the story survival of Roadby Cormac McCarthy, while two plots set in outer space unfold in parallel -in a kind of Enterprise ship equipped with the technology of Minority report (Steven Spielberg, 2002)- and in Augustine’s past. The spectacular nature of the galactic set pieces, which show that Clooney learned more than one trick on the set of Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón, 2013), and the expressive gazes of Felicity Jones and David Oyelowo (like interracial Eva and Adam) enliven the performance, but the hodgepodge sensation prevents fully enjoy a work that will be remembered more for its message than for its form.

To glimpse what awaits us if we don’t start taking care of our planet.

The best: the physical aspect of Clooney’s acting work.

The worst: the way in which the subplots of the film are connected.
