Review of “The Top”

Ibon Cormenzana directs Javier Rey and Patricia López Arnaiz in an adventure of mountaineering and discovery.

Mateo needs to climb the Annapurna. He knows that it is very dangerous, that the family anxiously awaits his return at home and that climbing alone at this time of year does not put the cards in his favor, but he really needs to climb the Annapurna. Luckily for him, and for the viewers, on his journey he will run into Ione, an expert mountaineer unable to return to the flat world after successfully reaching the summit.

‘The top’ is the perfect excuse for climbers and laymen of vertical discoveries to immerse themselves in the psychological journey that the mountain offers, a poem written by Nerea Castro together with its director, Ibon Cormenzana, responsible for the route in which we accompany the desperate –and dedicated– Javier Rey until Patricia López Arnaiz comes to save us all. As it did with her career in particular, and with Spanish cinema in general, the Goya won with ‘Ane’ (DP Sañudo, 2020) seems to have endowed the actress, who had already been demonstrating her talent for a decade, with a renewed presence on screen that turns each of its shots into an irresistible image.

For those who know that by going up the mountain they can go down into its abysses.

The worst: that someone runs out of strength to reach the summit.
