Review of ‘Ambulance. Escape plan’, the king of kinetic explosions returns

Michael Bay leads a spectacular endless chase with Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González in the lead.

Veteran Will Sharp has serious problems paying for his wife’s treatment in the terrifying American medical system and, desperate, decides to team up with his brother, a bank robber, to make one last big heist. But something goes wrong in their escape and they end up fleeing in an ambulance together with an injured police officer and a paramedic. From that moment, Michael Bay gives us a frenetic chase of an hour and a half in which it seems that we return to its originsto those late 90s in which he knew how to take over from James Cameron after the end of the cycle that was ‘Lies risky’ (1994) and, for better and for worse, invent the action cinema of the 2000s.

High-flying cars, low-gliding helicopters, highways turned into obstacle courses, high-speed open-bottom operations, and a low-key dose of bad jokes run through the footage of ‘Ambulance. Escape plan’, a remake on steroids of the Danish ‘Ambulancen’ (Laurits Munch-Petersen, 2005) that Bay, and screenwriter Chris Fedak, have turned into a gigantic set-piece of action in which Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Eiza González enter the game thanks (probably) to the contagious enthusiasm of its director.

And it is that the hiatus started by ‘Transformers’ (2007) made the director of ‘Armageddon’ (1998) become a kind of explosive meme in the collective imagination. Luckily for everyone, the changing robots from outer space did not absorb his desire to amaze us and, as he has already shown in different oases in his desert mechanic such as ‘Pain and Money’ (2013) and ’13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi’ ( 2016), there is still cinema in its entrails.

This is demonstrated in this title that, almost entirely, is made up of one of the most spectacular and complex chases ever shot, a cinematic experience comparable to the discharge of a defibrillator at maximum power that deserves to be experienced in a dark room, with the sound at full power and a screen at the level of the filmmaker who gave the world ‘The Rock’ (1996).

For those who crave a vibrant adrenaline rush on the big screen.

The best: imagine the smile of Michael Bay every day of filming.

The worst: that the data does not accompany the revived king of kinetic explosions.
