Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh direct a cast led by Alseni Bathily, Lyna Khoudri and Jamil McCraven.
In 2015, Fanny Liatard and Jérémy Trouilh made a series of short reports on the inhabitants of Gagarine, a housing project located in Ivry-sur-Seine, on the outskirts of Paris, which was facing imminent demolition. In love with the found stories, and absorbed before the forced disappearance of the home of all its inhabitantshave transferred their first fiction to that liminal space in which reality tried to demolish dreams.
There we meet Youri, a 16-year-old boy who dreams of being like his idol, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, while he improvises all kinds of arrangements in the condemned building to try to pass the review that will certify the end of the once noisy block. As if he were the last MIT engineer, his reforms allow him to extend his stay in the only space he has known while he delights the viewer with a dreamlike proposal beyond. A delicious tale that serves as testament and legend, a short story that dreams of a better universe within ours, perhaps the most daring journey that we can allow ourselves.
For those who look for stars no matter how gray the sky gets.
The best: the mix of fantastic drama and documentary dreamscape.
The worst: that its status as a social cinema distances it from the public.
