Criticism of ‘Three thousand years waiting for you’, the fantastic journey of George Miller

Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton star in George Miller’s new film, a collection of short stories with genius included.

When no one expected it, a veteran filmmaker struggling with a soulless modern Hollywood (sold to some devilish franchisee) like George Miller renounced the artificiality of digital to return to cinema its kinetic and analog force with Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). The power not only of images, but of the concept of storytelling as something as simple (as complex) as a bunch of crazy cars going from point A to point B and vice versa. Nobody, not even those who were enthusiastic about that extreme cinematographic purity, could expect Miller to return with one of the most free, personal and intimate exercises that a cinema like the current one was not prepared to host in its fragmented womb and without exhibition halls and without an audience with the necessary patience to be dazzled and fascinated by the thousand and one stories that a genius emerged from a lamp (Idris Elba, between Rex Ingram of the thief of baghdad of 1940 and the Louis of interview with the vampire) relates to a seeker and historian of narratives (Tilda Swinton, as prone to being swept away by the beauty of the intangible as Sister Clodagh in Black Narcissus).

Three thousand years waiting for you takes the digital brush to return to the craftsmanship of Méliès or Segundo de Chomón, coloring their fantastic fables frame by frame, which were more so because they were emulsified on a new and magical medium such as cinematography. His stories within stories have the texture (sometimes physical: those gadgets so much in the work of the Czech Karel Zeman) of those who enchanted us with fantasies from the Arabian Nights, but above all of storytellers and their attentive listeners. Because in the end, this fantastical ordeal is about two lonely people in a room oblivious to a modern world that is hell-bent on ending magic. From an author like George Miller oblivious to a modern Hollywood that has insisted on banishing magic.

For those willing to let themselves be carried away by the oral and visual force of stories

The worst: that you can sometimes confuse poetry with kitsch.
