Criticism of ‘Brave Hearts’, the children of war

Mona Achache directs this French production about a group of children who, during World War II, seek refuge inside Chambord Castle.

A film like ‘Brave Hearts’ is today almost a rarity. It evokes a situation that was frequent in occupied France in 1942 (the flight of Jewish children from Nazi clutches) without historicist or sociological airs. Its protagonists are a group of homeless minors (parents who have already died or have been deported) and turns its back completely (or almost) on sentimentality and the easy tears that such an issue would have aroused in other hands. And he resolves his story, which is a long adventure dotted with incidents, in a grateful footage that does not exceed an hour and a half.

the apparent Achache’s purpose is to tell a story in the most effective way, getting to the point concisely and without frills. The small protagonists, the relationships between them and the modest doses of fantasy (the pages of the magazine ‘Coeurs vaillants’, where Tintin was born) that keep them alive in moments of despair are very good. Of course, the Germans and their trained dogs are shown too silly: does it seem that they spend a night under the tree where the children hide and do not find out?

The best: it is told with economy of means, without spectacular effects.

The worst: no, the Germans couldn’t be that stupid.
