Criticism of ‘The crooked lines of God’: Inside the asylum

Oriol Paulo directs Bárbara Lennie in the film adaptation of the novel by Torcuato Luca de Tena.

To Oriol Paulo’s taste for complex police plots, with the occasional trap, this story by Torcuato Luca de Tena fits like a glove. The continuous twists and turns of the script and the surprise characters of ‘The crooked lines of God’, so common in the cinema of the director of ‘The Body’ and ‘Contratiempo’, will be more disconcerting and will be more enjoyable if you have not read the original novel . The fan with some baggage behind him will doubt until the last minute if the protagonist, a Bárbara Lennie who perfectly gives the type of that beautiful, elegant, flirtatious, intelligent woman who is used to keeping her distance, is closer to the audacious reporter Johnny Barrett from ‘Corridor of No Return’ (S. Fuller, 1963) or the police trickster Teddy Daniels from ‘Shutter Island’ (M. Scorsese, 2010). The suspense is assured.

In the artistic direction, a retro aesthetic has been chosen in settings and costumes, perhaps to give a classic touch to the image, which requires an initial effort to identify with what is happening on screen. The secondary roles are very successful. Eduard Fernández, always credible; Pablo Derqui, magnificent in a character that inspires tenderness while worrying about his sincerity, and Samuel Soler, in a complex and key role in the plot. From the beginning the spectator is as much on guard as the protagonist when they tell you when you enter the center: Once you walk through this door, forget who you were out there.

Ideal for lovers of complex mystery plots

The worst: its duration could have been shortened and the outcome simplified.
