In 2018, Louis Garrel directed ‘A Faithful Man’, an atypical romantic comedy in which he explored the age crisis of a man who feared that he was slowly drifting away from youth. ‘A small plan… how to save the planet’ seems to be a continuation of that one and takes up, years later, the lives of its leading couple (same names, same actors), now parents of a 13-year-old boy who has proposed what that indicates the title: save the planet.
Moving in a very fine intermediate between the family comedy, the most atypical social cinema and a daydream (which corresponds to the illusions of the characters) of fantastic textures, Garrel makes a delightful – yet deeply poignant – film in which humor, affection and fanciful escapes are used to explore the contradictions of the present from a space of intimacy (the home and the conflicts of a family). From there rise a fable that speaks of the conflict between the honest awareness of the need to fight for a better world and the practice of a comfortable activism that is more illusory than real.
