Two nights after a man attacked her on stage at the Hollywood Bowl, Dave Chapelle spoke about the incident Thursday at an undercover comedy show in Los Angeles.
The comedian appeared at the Comedy Store, the club’s 70-seat Belly Room. While Chapel’s appearance was a last-minute addition, rumors circulated the Thursday night before the show aired, with enthusiastic fans paying $160 for a ticket to see the “Secret Show” with the anonymous comedian.
Close fans included a host of celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, Sean “Big” Combs, rapper Yassin Bay and comedian Jeff Ross, who was part of the Hollywood Bowl show in Chapel on Tuesday night. Michelle Wolf, who was also on the show on Tuesday night, opened for Chappelle. Ten minutes after the Chapelle shooting, he was joined on stage by Chris Rock, who was at the show on Tuesday night and, of course, beaten up by Will Smith at the 2022 Oscars.

Donning a bag and smoking his favorite cigarette, American Spirits, Chapel took the stage to greet the hero to a small crowd.
Chapelle immediately jumped to the subject of the Hollywood Cup attack on Tuesday night, saying he couldn’t see the man’s face, but that he was holding his hair.
Chapelle described that immediately after the incident, her son hugged her and said, “Dad, I love you.” Chapelle said the strange sight of Jamie Foxx, for some reason, was wearing a “sheriff’s hat”, which calmed him down.
Chapel shouted to the many people who contacted him after the incident, “I happen to love him very much,” he said of a group that included Louis CK.
It was at this moment that Rocky joined Chapel on stage, causing great excitement in the audience.
Rock took Chapel’s stool and stayed there until the end of the play. These were the two biggest comedians who joked about the attacks they just suffered – it was all happening on the 70-seat Comedy Store app. As such, the moment is felt historically.
“Anyway, you hurt someone with a reputation!” Chapelle played with Rock. “I was beaten by a homeless boy who had leaves in his hair.”
Rock smiled and replied, “I was horrified by the smoothest N. that ever rapped.”
Chapelle later described persuading LAPD that she had been allowed into the room where her alleged attacker, 23-year-old Isaiah Lee, was staying. “I needed to talk to him,” Chapelle said. He asked Lee what could have triggered his seizure, to which Lee, whom Chapel said he thought was mentally ill, told the story of a Brooklyn grandmother who was forcibly removed from the neighborhood for gentrification. The attack was intended to draw attention to their plight, Chapel says.
Eventually, topics shifted from a double attack, to other news: the Johnny Depp-Amber Heard libel trial and the looming threat against Ro Wade.
But the deviations were short-lived. It was the attack on the Chapel that was the main topic of discussion that night, and the city where it took place.
“I’m [place] “Where were you sitting in the car when Big Smalls died?” Chapel said at the end of his presentation, looking at Combs. “I hate this city.” Saying that, she took a pack of cigarettes and left the place.
