Tests, treatment, lifestyle: what questions to ask the doctor in the event of a cancer diagnosis – checklist for the chief oncologist

Being alone with a terrible diagnosis, there is a risk of confusion. Therefore, a surgical oncologist, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, compiled a checklist of 15 main questions to help patients, the answers to which should be obtained from a doctor. Responses should be securely recorded – for example, recorded on a dictaphone in order to establish a processing route, so that nothing is overlooked or confused.

One of Russia’s most respected cancer treatment specialists, surgeon-oncologist, doctor of medical sciences, Professor Andrey Kaprin shared very important information for patients and their families on his personal Telegram channel. He listed questions to ask about disease, treatment and lifestyle if a cancer diagnosis is made and a tumor is found.

A diagnosis of cancer is troubling, but cancer is not a death sentence. Ahead of the patient and his relatives, treatment is possible, long and difficult. Asking the right questions is important so that the communication with the doctor is productive and allows you to truly control the situation. The chief oncologist of Russia has compiled a list – we give it in full.

  2. What do the TNM abbreviations and numbers mean?
  3. What morphological, immunohistochemical, molecular genetic analyzes should be carried out?
  4. What will be the plan of examinations to be carried out before choosing a treatment strategy?

  1. What treatments are available for my disease?
  2. What are the benefits and risks of each of the treatments listed?
  3. Can the treatment take place on the basis of your clinic?
  4. What treatment steps and methods are included in the CHI program and VMP (high-tech medical care), which are performed on a self-help basis?
  5. What criteria will be used to assess the effectiveness of the treatment?
  6. The side effects associated with each stage of treatment and how to deal with them?
  7. Will my treatment affect my ability to have children? If so, is it possible to solve this problem in advance and keep the biomaterial?

  1. Can medications a patient takes for another disease affect cancer treatment?
  2. What are the general recommendations at the treatment planning stage regarding nutrition, drinking regimen, sports, swimming pool/sauna/bath visit?
  3. Are there any contraindications to taking medication?
  4. What examinations and how often do you have to undergo after the treatment?

Andrey Kaprin, Russia’s chief oncologist, also reminds: patients should carefully collect and store all examination results, extracts, CT and MRI discs, clearly know where the histological preparations (“glasses”) are and be ready to receive them. Each of these data may be necessary during processing. It is important to make copies of all documents and forms – digital and paper.
