A newcomer to the cast of Gladiator 2
The sequel to the great success GladiatorRidley Scott’s unforgettable peplum released in 2000 and crowned with five Oscars including Best Picture and Best Actor for Russell Crowe, is currently in pre-production and a flamboyant cast it is forming. We already know that Paul Mescal, Irish actor on the rise after the success ofafter sun of Charlotte Wells, will play the lead role of this Gladiator 2which is none other than that of Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). This was played by Spencer Treat Clark in Gladiator.
Let’s learn now, through The Hollywood Reporter, that another young Irish actor is about to conclude negotiations for the role of Emperor Geta. This is Barry Keoghan, coming out of a prolific year 2022 with his cameo in the skin of the Joker in The Batman and most importantly, with his rousing performance in The Banshees of Inisherin.
Barry Keoghan, active on screens since 2011, revealed himself at the top level in 2017 with Dunkirk AND Slaying of the Sacred Deer. Facing Paul Mescal, finding his compatriot Barry Keoghan is therefore the promise of witnessing very beautiful performances. But “face” to Paul Mescal, is probably inaccurate. Indeed, the story of Emperor Geta suggests it this will not be the antagonist of this film. Emperor, yes, but not in the style of Commodus…
A fratricidal war ahead
Paul Mescal will play adult Lucius Gladiator 2admiring the personality and career of the late Maximus, and Barry Keoghan should therefore play the emperor Geta, who ruled the Roman Empire from February to December 211 AD. He was the son of the emperor Septimius Severus and exercised power together with his brother Caracalla. Of these two co-emperors, Geta is described as the most sensitive, the most cultured, interested in the arts and things of the mind. His brother Caracalla is described by historians as short-tempered, passionate about war, cruel… The two brothers, radically opposed, have always hated each other. So much so that in December 2011, Caracalla has his brother assassinated.in the arms of the mother, to exercise power alone.
Gladiator 2 should therefore tell this period of the Empire, the brief year of power of Geta, during which Lucio (who died at an early age in reality but very much alive in the films Gladiator) would be about thirty years old. And so Lucius might as well have to choose sides between Geta and Caracallaeach trying to eliminate the other…
From there, other questions arise, especially on this casting point: who to embody Caracalla ?
