Simple and Harmful: The Most Dangerous Sex Position Leading to Male Injury

Do you often consider sex a dangerous activity? Let’s assume so, because it’s not easy to forget an accidental pregnancy you don’t want or an STD. There are also simply unpleasant sensations – for example, due to a lack of lubrication or physiology.

However, sex is not only traumatic for women – men also face this problem. A group of Brazilian doctors recently calculated which positions are most often associated with it – they published the results of their study in the scientific journal Advances in Urology.

The most dangerous position for men

Doctors have analyzed statistics for 13 years and identified the positions that most often lead to a fracture of the penis – a rupture of the tunica albuginea, which is often accompanied by a loud cracking sound. The first place was taken by the “jumper” – it accounts for 50% of such injuries.

“This issue is related to the pubic bone,” says sex therapist Kat Van Kirk. Every woman has it a little differently. If the lubrication is not sufficient, then when a woman sits on the penis, it can catch on the pubic bone and the force applied during the movement is enough to injure it.

Doggy style takes second place – it accounts for 29% of injuries in men. However, according to pelvic health specialist Dr. Christy Latham, for women doggy style is even more dangerous: in the case of a short vaginal canal, a deep and forceful thrust can lead to bruising, bleeding and even a vaginal rupture.

The safest sex position

“When it comes to sex, the safest option is the spooning position, which is generally recommended for pregnant women,” says Dr. Van Kirk. “In this position, there is no pressure on any particular joint, there is a small butt pad during penetration, so the penis will not hit the pelvic bone as hard and quickly or hurt the vagina.”

But the safety of spoon pose doesn’t mean it should be used on its own. Kat believes that the key is to follow the rules of safety: using lube, communicating during sex and talking when the sensations become unpleasant, as well as avoiding acrobatic experiments and wobbly tables. And, finally, we must not forget that injuries are not the end of a sex life: most of them are easily treated, the main thing is to consult a doctor in time.
