Melanoma develops from melanocytes which produce pigment. Ordinary moles develop from them.

But it is important to know that a malignant formation can occur not only on the skin. Melanoma can attack almost anywhere in our body.

In 70% of cases, a tumor of degenerated melanocytes forms on the surface of the legs, back, arms, torso and face. Less often – on the inner surface of the hands and feet, under the nail plate, in the eyes and even in the mucous membranes, for example, the gastrointestinal tract, upper and lower respiratory tract.

Melanoma – who is at risk?

First of all, as the chief oncologist of Russia said, these are those who go to solariums and like to stay in the sun for a long time. Ultraviolet in 90% of cases causes the development of melanoma. One of three types of radiation damages the DNA of the cell, and this is what leads to the onset of disease. The hereditary factor also plays a role – if there were cases of melanoma in the family, it increases the risk of this type of malignancy during life by 10-15%.

However, moles by themselves do not lead to melanoma. A tumor can also occur in a person whose skin is completely clean and smooth – everyone has melanocytes.

How is melanoma treated?

The diagnosis establishes the parameters of education and the approximate time of its appearance, a dermatoscopic examination is carried out. Also, the doctor can evaluate the lymph nodes closest to the tumor and order an ultrasound of the abdominal cavity, the retroperitoneal space, an X-ray (or a CT scan) of the chest organs. In some cases, an MRI of the brain is also performed.
