The great Ralph Fiennes offered more than a few outstanding performances in his day. Of Schindler’s Listis Amon Göth The Grand Hotel BudapestIt’s Mr. Gustave H., he did almost everything. Of course, the most iconic (and sinister) character of him is undoubtedly Harry Potter‘s Lord Voldemort (a work that is almost over). Although his most recent role in horror comedy The menu it might seem on top of that role when it comes to the scary factor. Building on the new trailer, Fiennes seems (rightfully) to sink into this new part.
projector images The menu sees Ralph Fiennes as Chef Slowik, who runs an elegant and upscale restaurant on a remote island. He and his staff specialize in molecular gastronomy infused dishes that include “fat”, “salt” and “protein”. Apparently, they also include entire ecosystems (we’re talking about gastronomy). Diners initially seem to enjoy their meals, although they soon discover a more sinister side of the culinary expert and his highly obedient kitchen staff. (I don’t know about you, but I smell cannibal cuisine.)
The Harry Potter alum is also joined by a host of other fantastic actors, who play the guests who visit the restaurant. The main ones are Anya Taylor-Joy and Nicolas Hoult, who play Margot and Tyler respectively. The young couple have different feelings about their surroundings, with Taylor-Joy’s character (who appears to be the eyes and ears of the audience) expressing skepticism. Meanwhile, Hoult’s foodie seems to be enjoying every minute, and judging by the footage, he’ll be providing most of the comedy as part of the proceedings. The film also includes big names like John Leguizamo, Janet McTeer and Aimee Carrero.
Ralph Fiennes looks like a truly terrifying delight, remaining wise but also intense. Slowik doesn’t seem to have the ferocity of Voldemort (which can only be interpreted by Fiennes). However, if all of his acting works out, this character could become one of the best modern horror villains.
If the film really went the cannibal’s path, the Mark Mylod-directed film (written by Seth Reiss and Will Tracy) would be joined by Sebastian Stan’s horror comedy. New, launched earlier this year. Interestingly, this film was also released by Searchlight Pictures and, like this film, was produced by Adam McKay. It appears that the studio and the producer are trying to offer viewers delightfully chilling stories. Honestly, given their storylines, both films would likely be useful for nighttime horror movies.
The menu it certainly has a promising premise and a brilliant cast led by Ralph Fiennes. We’ll see if the filmmakers have managed to create something as precise and delicious as chef Slowik and his colleagues. And if you’re willing to bet that Fiennes’ performance will surpass his work as Voldemort, now is the time to place them.
The menu will be released on November 18th. Make sure you keep track of this and any other new movies coming out via the Gossipify Calendar.
