The Lord of the Rings continue with The War of the Rohirrim
After the first season of the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power and ahead of upcoming live-action films produced by Warner Bros., fans of the universe created by JRR Tolkien will be able to return to Middle-earth in April 2024 with The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim. An anime film directed by Kenji Kamiyama (Hirune Hime, Daydreams, Ghost in the shell SAC_2045) and on which Philippa Boyens, co-writer of the trilogies The Lord of the Rings AND The Hobbit by Peter Jackson, is executive producer.
This feature film will take place over 200 years before the search for Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring. As Philippa Boyens explained at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the plot of The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim it won’t be about the One Ring and Sauron. Based on three paragraphs of Appendix A of the Lord of the Rings written by JRR Tolkien, the film will tell the story of the royal house of Eorl, which ruled Rohan.
The heroine will be Hèra, never mentioned by the writer, daughter of Helm Hammerhand, king of Rohan. A fierce and vulnerable young woman according to Kenji Kamiyama who will find herself at the center of a conflict between his father Helm and Freca, a lord of Rohan who wants his son Wulf to marry Hera. Their misunderstanding will result in a legendary battle. Gaia Wise (Hera), Brian Cox (Helm), Shaun Dooley (Freca) and Luke Pasqualino (Wulf) form the main voice cast.
Gorgeous first pictures
Several excerpts from The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim were presented at the Annecy Festival, including an introduction narrated by Miranda Otto, the interpreter of Éowyn in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, as well asa spectacular montage “surprisingly gory” according to the site CloneWeb. Pictures with which viewers were able to find well-known Middle-earth landscapes such as Edoras, the capital of Rohan, Fort-le-Cor or the fortress of Isengardsecond /Movie.

All while mixing Japanese animation with visual elements reminiscent of Peter Jackson’s trilogy and the work of illustrators John Howe and Alan Lee. For CloneWeb, “the desire to prolong Peter Jackson’s adventure” is present. For /Movie, this first taste is “fantastic”. In 2D, the film mixes many techniques, including the motion capture of the actors which served as a reference for the animators According to the site, “the result is fluid, (…) with realistic movement” where “the interpretation of the characters is heard, while clearly being the work of the animators”.
The Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim East to be discovered from 10 April 2024 at the cinema.
