Iconic villains like Maleficent, Gaston and Scar make Variety’s list
Over the nearly 100 years of history, the The Walt Disney Companybetter known as just disney, released dozens of films in history. Including, many of them marked generations and received important awards, in addition to the highlight of countless villains.
To celebrate the company’s centenary, which takes place on October 16, 2023, Clayton Davis published a list on Variety which lists the 10 best animation villains from the legendary animation studio hollywood.
The ranking opens with ja’far (Jonathan Freeman), antagonist of Aladdin (1992), in tenth place. Second Davis, the character delivers iconic lines with “over-the-top intonations,” as well as spawning memes to this day. The list also has Captain Hook, the evil stepmother, gaston and much more.
The celebrated podium starts with Ursula (Pat Carroll), in The Little Mermaid (1989), in third place. “A grandiose personality, her extravagance, desire for power and thirst for revenge are a match for the young mermaid Ariel, who seeks the love of a human,” she said.
The second position is occupied by Scar (Jeremy Irons), in The Lion King (1994): “The manipulation and cunning tactics of the ‘third in line [de sucessão]’ to the Throne are deftly brought to life thanks to the team of expert animators and musicians who give it a quintessential thug number and, of course, the Academy Award-winning voice talent. Jeremy Irons.”
And while he may be “surrounded by idiots”, his charisma and power to hunger is best demonstrated through his unswerving murder of mufasa in the stampede and his implacable disdain for the young simba.
Already maleficenticonic villain Sleeping Beauty (1959), figures at the top of the ranking. “The way she delights in inflicting curses and pain on others with a dramatic laugh makes the children’s movie feel as close as the disney I’m done with making an animated horror movie (that floating green light),” opined Clayton Davis.
