Indiana Jones 5: a star of the saga would have liked to have a more substantial role

Indiana Jones 5 : the archaeologist bows

At 80, Harrison Ford is back in one of the most iconic roles of his career. The actor holds the hat and whip of the famous archaeologist who appeared for the first time in 1981 in Raiders of the Lost Ark with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. In this fifth work set in 1969, for which James Mangold (Logano, Le Mans 66) takes over from Steven Spielberg as director, Indy is divorced and lives in a small New York apartment. She is about to retire when her goddaughter Helena Shaw (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) comes to him for help.

The latter is in search of the quadrant of Archimedes, an artifact with unsuspected powers also coveted by the Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen). A little overwhelmed, Indiana Jones finds himself reluctantly embarked on one last adventure to the four corners of the world and time.

While introducing new characters, including those played by Antonio Banderas and Ethann Isidore, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny also allows viewers to see some iconic faces from the saga again, including that of Sallah, played by John Rhys-Davies. Marion Ravenwood, Indy’s great love played by Karen Allen, also appears at the end of the film. According to her interpreter, the heroine is already present in Raiders of the Lost Ark AND Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull he would play a more substantial role in earlier versions of the project.

A reduced presence for Marion Ravenwood?

Asked by varietyKaren Allen thought the plot of this fifth installment would be “a story in which Indy and Marion would progress together”. She adds:

When Steven (Spielberg) was going to direct the movie, I think the scripts were more about an Indy/Marion story. But when Steven went out and James (Mangold) came in, he started all over again with new writers, and they went in a different direction.

Despite a significantly reduced attendance, the actress remains “deeply happy” to have been able to participate in these farewells :

If this really is the last film in this saga – if it’s the last story with Harrison as Indy and me as Marion – I was deeply happy that they are back together at the end. It meant a lot to me, to feel that they were riding into the sunset together.

If Karen Allen appears only in the final scene, her reunion with Harrison Ford is particularly touching, especially in light of all that their characters experienced between the fourth and fifth opus.
