John Wick 4: This alternate ending that changes everything for the character

John Wick 4 : the final fight?

While trying to mourn his partner by caring for an adorable puppy, John Wick’s (Keanu Reeves) retirement was interrupted by a stupid Russian mobster in the first part of the saga. Since then the fearsome hitman has been excommunicated, hunted down the streets of New York and above all has amassed dozens of corpses. In John Wick: Chapter 4directed by Chad Stahelski, the hero clearly more comfortable with bullets than words faces a new enemy: the arrogant Marquis de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård).

Rather than challenge the boogeyman himself, he sends his henchmen to hunt John Wick around the world. He also summons Caine (Donnie Yen), a blind assassin and old friend of the hero who has no choice but to join this fight if he wants his daughter to stay alive. After many shootings and fights in Osaka and Berlin, John Wick finds himself having to face Caine in a duel at dawn at the foot of the Sacré-Coeur basilica in Montmartre, Paris.

A more explicit alternative ending

During this final face-off, Caine touches John Wick several times, before the latter strikes down the Marquis who, as expected, has broken the rules of the High Table. A few moments later, John Wick ends up falling apart, appeased as he witnesses a magnificent sunrise over the capital. The next scene, Winston (Ian McShane) and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) pay their respects at the killer’s grave, which lies next to his wife Helen (Bridget Moynahan). An exchange between them then suggests that Baba Yaga may still be alive and that he would prefer that everyone believe him dead, in order to finally enjoy a moment of calm.

Asked by EmpireChad Stahelski explained that he has filmed a much less ambiguous alternative ending, where John Wick appears in the flesh. However, test screening audiences enjoyed the ending more than the entire world could experience, as the director reveals:

We shot an ending where we saw John Wick. So it was clear that he was alive. But the audiences we tested the feature with largely preferred the ambiguous ending.
