Actors and actresses join the screenwriters
This is a historic event that is brewing in the United States. While the WGA writers’ strike is still ongoing, they are expected to be joined by their fellow actors and actresses. In fact, the contractual negotiations between the main union of interpreters, SAG AFTRAand the leading association of American audiovisual production and distribution companies, theAMPTP extension, which ended without reaching an agreement. Consequentially, a strike led by SAG-AFTRA scheduled to begin Thursday, July 13, 2023 in the morning from the West Coast of the United States.
The moment is historic in Hollywood, as it will be the first actors’ strike since 1980, and the first joint strike with the screenwriters since 1963. The challenge for the actors’ union, which has more than 160,000 members, was to renew theand multi-year contract which binds its members to film and television studios, represented by the AMPTP. The negotiation period was to end on June 30. It was extended until July 12 in hopes of reaching an agreement. It has failed and the strike is now almost certain.
What consequences in Hollywood?
In addition to the projects already affected by the writers’ strike, a strike by the SAG-AFTRA union would have the immediate effect of shutting down and/or disrupting a large number of productions in progress. This concerns American productions, but also any foreign production in which one or more union members participate.
In addition to filming, in the event of a strike, the promotion and presence of artists on the red carpet they are prohibited. Award ceremonies and festivals are also affected. For example, the Emmy Awards ceremony, which will take place on September 18, 2023, would most likely be postponed.
