Dark Powers on Disney+: You’ll love this Korean superhero series!

The powers of the shadowa pleasant surprise from South Korea

who said that Disney+ have we only found Marvel superhero series? The streaming platform has certainly communicated a lot about it Secret invasion, but there are other nuggets in the genre. The test with The powers of the shadow which comes to us from South Korea.

And while Secret invasion turned out to be quite disappointing, with the same flaws found in most of Disney+’s Marvel shows, The powers of the shadow it’s a very pleasant surprise! The series is taken from the webtoon In movement (series VO title) by Kang Full, also with script writing.

The story is quite simple and may even seem too classic. We first follow Bong-seok, a teenager who hides an extraordinary ability. Indeed, when overcome with strong emotion, Bong-seok starts flying. A power that wouldn’t be so annoying if the boy could control it. This is why his mother, who fears that his secret will be discovered, makes sure to weigh him down as much as possible, both with food and with adding weights in his bag.

Only Bong-seok will make friends Hee-soo, a new student who joins his class during the last quarter of the year. She knows nothing of his power, nor does he suspect it the girl is able to heal herself instantly. But their lives and those of their parents are about to be turned upside down when a man eliminates people with of superhuman abilities.

Adolescents with motor powers

Teens with powers is obviously something we’re all too familiar with. More than once the genre served as metaphor to evoke puberty and the transition to adulthood. It was pretty clearly in the middle of Spiderman (2002) by Sam Raimi when Peter Parker locked himself in his room to practice projecting his canvas…

There is also a rather similar sequence in Les Pouvoirs de l’ombre with Bong-seok which, after a contact with Hee-soo that has a great effect on him, ends up flying off and drops a garden hose from which water begins to gush. It is difficult to make more obvious what this implies.

But behind this side “déjà vu”, there is inside The powers of the shadow an extremely effective, intelligent and humane treatment. Because following these teenage questions, the series points out relationships between young people. The rapprochement between Bong-seok and Hee-soo, who become very good friends (and maybe more?), and who constantly touch each other because, through small attentions, both reveal their affection.

Also, the relationship between children and parent respective (Bong-seok has only his mother and Hee-soo his father) is very relevant. From episode 2, Bong-seok’s past offers its share of emotion while his mother, exhausted, does everything to keep her son on the ground. One example among many that testifies to the ability of the series The powers of the shadow has alternating fun and tenderness.

A top cast

We could certainly have been satisfied with following the lives of these young people in high school, but the series adds a more action-oriented dimension that we could have done without. Paralleling the daily life of Bong-seok and Hee-soo, we discover that a government company is responsible for the abilities of these young people, but also some adults.

Less interesting and a little more laborious, this part still allows the show to deliver dark sequences and great violencewith all the same heartwarming aspects here and there.

However, despite being an entertainment series, The powers of the shadow East efficient and engaging. Its fairly short format of seven episodes means the story isn’t too stretched out, although by the end of the first season we can only hope that a sequel will see the light of day – twenty episodes in total would be expected.

Finally, the casting it has a lot to do with the attachment we have to the characters. To start with Lee Jung-ha and Go Youn-jung who play the two teenagers. Together they make a beautiful duo with great chemistry that makes you fall in love with them right away. We also highlight Han Hyo-joo (Bong-seok’s mother), already very good The Pirates: Ours is the Royal Treasure! (available on Netflix) and which continues to convince here.

The powers of the shadow can be found on Disney+ from 9 August
