Bradley Cooper returns to direct with Maestro
Five years after rocking the box office with A star was born (which earned $436 million on a $36 million budget), Bradley Cooper is back behind the camera with the film Master.
This is a biopic about Leonard Bernstein, the legendary composer of West Side History. The plot is particularly concerned with his marriage to Felicia Montealegre over thirty years, as well as the homosexual relationships he had had and therefore his wife was perfectly aware of it.
As for casting, Bradley Cooper plays the composer, while Carey Mulligan plays his wife. Also in the game are Maya Hawke, Sarah Silverman, and Matt Bomer. Master is expected directly on Netflix on December 20 after being presented at the Venice Film Festival, and should be well into the Oscar race.
Two days ago, the streaming platform unveiled a first preview of the feature film:
Following the publication of these first images, a controversy has arisen regarding Bradley Cooper’s appearance, and more specifically the appearance of… his nose.
The nose of discord
Indeed, many viewers were shocked to see the actor’s prosthetic nose, which they said was used to match “the stereotypical physique of Jews in Hollywood movies.” A few hours after the start of this controversy ended Master, Leonard Bernstein’s children communicated publicly on the composer’s Twitter account.
We can thus read in this press release defending Bradley Cooper’s point of viewand the fact that he decided to get as close to Leonard Bernstein’s physique as possible in the film Master :
It breaks our hearts to see misrepresentations or misunderstandings of his efforts. It turns out that Leonard Bernstein had a really big nose. Bradley opted to use makeup to amplify the likeness of him, and it fits perfectly. We are also certain that our father would have been OK with this. Complaints about this issue strike us primarily as dishonest attempts to demean a successful person, a practice we have sadly seen all too often, directed at our father. While making this film, we could feel the deep respect and, yes, love that Bradley brought to his portrayal of Leonard Bernstein and his wife, our mother Felicia. We feel so lucky to have had this experience with Bradley and can’t wait for the world to discover his creation.
