Long before directing Spider-Man, Sam Raimi managed to overcome a problem after not meeting with Stan Lee
Long before filming appearances by Stan Lee in the film trilogy Spider manlaunched between 2002 and 2007, Sam Raimi had a very unusual interaction with the editor of Marvel: Forged several autographs from the comic book legend.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaker revealed how he tried to contact Lee when he was young. As he couldn’t do it, he had to find an alternative way to fake this meeting that took years to happen.
“My first experience with Stan Lee was pretty bad, actually. I was an avid reader of Spider man It is The Avengers in the late 1970s, and in 1980 I was working on my first horror film in New York,” he recalled. I also worked as a camp counselor in Algonquin Park.”
“One day they decided to do something with the theme of Marvel and said, ‘Can you make it Stan Lee autograph some posters?’ I was so naive that I said ‘fine,'” he continued Raimi. “I went to the Marvel and I asked if I could see Stan Lee.”
And the people there went crazy. ‘You are crazy?! You can not see Stan Lee!’ So I spent the entire taxi ride back to the airport signing ‘Stan Lee‘ on all these posters. There I was, 20 years old, forging his signature.
So, the director was hired to direct a character from Marvel for the first time: Spider man. The trilogy features Leebut Sam Raimi he was against this idea, oddly enough, despite all his admiration.
“I got the job to Spider man in 1999. And Avi Arad [chefe da Marvel] said, ‘I want you to put Stan in the movie.’ And I said, ‘No. I know Stan, and he can’t act.’ AND Avi said, ‘I want him in the film. We did this to X-Menwe’re doing it here.'”
“Now imagine that you are a small director from England making Macbeth and they tell you, ‘Put the writer in the play.’ It seems absurd,” he said. “‘Okay, you want Shakespeare in the piece, I will put Shakespeare in the play.’ Now it’s one of my favorite parts of the movie.”
