Let’s start with the main thing: you are not the number on the scale or your BMI, and the key to living a long life and staying healthy is not weight, but physical activity and a balanced diet. However, if you want to lose weight, you have every right to do so: every woman decides for herself what to do with her body.
But there is one important nuance: it is better to get rid of extra pounds in a way that will not harm you and will help you achieve long-term results. In April 2023, a study was published in the Journal of the American Heart Association that helped identify exactly which ones belong to them.
Who was studied
Researchers at Ohio State University analyzed data from 20,305 U.S. adults over the age of 19 (average age 47) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2007 and 2016.
During the study, men and women talked about how much sleep they slept on average, what bad habits they had, how their weight changed, and what strategies they used to reduce it. The patients also underwent medical examinations and tests: their BMI, “bad” cholesterol (LDL) levels, blood sugar levels and blood pressure were determined.
“Bad” and “good” strategies
It turned out that people who tried to lose weight, but did not achieve it or did not maintain the results for more than a year, used the following means and tactics:

- taking prescription weight loss pills,
- take laxatives or induce vomiting,
- skip meals
- using fad diets – liquid, low carb, paleo, etc.
Plus, most people who didn’t pass smoked. Here’s what study participants who lost 5% or more of their weight and kept it off did:
- Balanced diet,
- consume optimal amounts of protein, refined grains and added sugars,
- moderate to vigorous physical activity.
The conclusions are simple: the optimal strategy for losing weight was, is and will be a balanced diet, in which a person does not give up any food (even added sugar), combined with physical exercise. Well, the next fad diet, even if everyone is talking about it on TikTok, will only give you temporary results that will quickly disappear.
