Tom Hanks had to alert fans by explaining that it wasn’t him in the dental plan commercial
Tom Hanks needed to alert fans about a dental plan commercial. The company used AI (Artificial Intelligence) to reproduce the actor’s appearance and insert it into the advertisement. “BEWARE! There’s a video out there promoting a dental plan with an AI version of me,” he wrote Hanks. “I have nothing to do with it.”

It is not the first time that the topic has come up between actors. Movie studios have proposed using AI to scan extras’ faces and use their image forever and indefinitely (via NME). The idea gained notoriety amid the union strike in Hollywood. Actors and screenwriters demand fair payment of residual royalties from streaming platforms, and the regulation of the use of AI.
On the podcast The Adam Buxton, Tone demonstrated concern with the use of technology: “I could get hit by a bus tomorrow, and that’s it, but performances could keep going and going and going. And outside of understanding what AI or deepfake is, there will be nothing to tell you that that that’s not me. It will have some degree of realistic quality. That’s certainly an artistic challenge, but also a cool one.”
