Marvel wants to move away from the MCU and plans a big change

Marvel Spotlight: new category independent from the MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) continues on its merry way, but it seems the excitement around it is starting to wear thin. It must be said that many things have changed since then. Iron Man (2008), the first film that launched the Expanded Universe. The original Avengers no longer exist and new characters have been introduced, but without, a priori, they have so much popularity among the general public. It is above all in the series, shown on Disney+, that superheroes struggle to excite. We saw this recently with Secret invasionwhile the next show, Echowill experience real change.

In fact, for this new series which will see the return of Kingpin, Disney+ will offer all the episodes simultaneously from January 10th. What the streaming platform has never done so far for its MCU programs. Furthermore, the series will be a launch opportunity a new label whose purpose is that move away from the continuity of the MCU. A named subcategory Marvel Spotlightwhich will therefore include films and standalone series.

The case Echo

Marvel fans will surely have noticed that this name is that of a 1970s anthology series, in which Ghost Rider was notably introduced. As well as revealing the logo (see below)Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming at Marvel Studios, spoke about this new feature (via Expiration).

Marvel Spotlight gives us a platform to bring more grounded, character-driven stories to the screen, and in the case of Echo, focusing on the street level, rather than the bigger issues of the MCU’s continuity. Just as comic book fans don’t need to read Avengers or Fantastic Four to enjoy a Ghost Rider Spotlight comic, our audience doesn’t need to have seen any other Marvel series to understand what’s going on in the story of Maya (heroine of Echo , editor Note).

Clearly, Marvel Studios wants to deliver address a large audience, and don’t risk leaving anyone who hasn’t followed the entire MCU on the sidelines. Logical and interesting to attract as many people as possible. However, make this announcement in relation to Echo is surprising, since the heroine Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, was introduced with Hawk eye. Furthermore, we find him for the role of the Caid Vincenzo D’Onofriowho played this character Reckless (2015-2018) and then return to Hawk eye. That remainsEcho is presented as a origin story. New audiences should therefore have no difficulty following it, but will they still be there to follow the series? Answer from January 10th onwards Disney+.
