An apostle like no other
After The harder they fallhis first feature film, an African-American western with Idris Elba and Regina King in the cast, Jeymes Samuel will return in January 2024 with a new film: The Book of Clarence. As he had previously announced, the ambition is great and “classic”. In fact, it is about proposing a peplum like those of the golden age of Hollywood, they like it Ben Hur OR Ten Commandmentsa great cinematic adventure with its heroes and epic action. This is what appears in the first images of The Book of Clarenceto discover in a spectacular trailer (video at the top of the article), where action and humor come together in a seductive energy.
A real casting
Lover of history and cinema, the Englishman Jeymes Samuel wants to put black people on the screen in stories, the ones he knew as a child but in which all the characters were white. After his western led by a cast entirely composed of black artists, he now proposes with The Book of Clarence a biblical epic on the same principle. It is set and centers on Clarence, an anonymous and unfortunate young man from Jerusalem who, determined to become someone, he will be inspired by Jesus and will proclaim himself the new Messiah.
In the role of Clarence we find the talented LaKeith Stanfield. He is joined in the cast by Omar Sy, RJ Cyler, David Oyelowo, Anna Diop, Caleb McLaughlin, James McAvoy and Benedict Cumberbatch. Enter an all-star cast, who look like they’re having a lot of fun in the trailer footage gladiatorial fights, fake and real miracles, chariot races and the fight against the Roman Empire. All over a hip hop composition provided by Jeymes Samuel, who is also accompanied in the production by Shawn Carter, aka Jay Z.
Announced in American theaters on January 12, 2024we can hope for a French distribution at the same time, but this still remains to be confirmed.
