The British broadcaster has been named as the likely host of the BBC’s Eurovision Song Contest 2023 as it will be impossible to host the show in Ukraine.
On May 14, Eurovision 2022 was won by the Ukrainian group Kalush Orchestra. Traditionally, the winner of the previous Eurovision event is the host of the following year’s event. But with Russia’s war against Ukraine showing no signs of abating, Eurovision organizer the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) said “the security and operational guarantees necessary for the broadcaster to host, organize and produce Eurovision” will be very difficult. He will host the event in Ukraine next year.
Instead, the EBU launched a discussion with the BBC, noting that British singer-songwriter Sam Ryder came in second in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.
“Obviously these are not circumstances that anyone would want,” the BBC said in a statement. “Following your decision, of course we will talk about the BBC, which organizes the Eurovision Song Contest.
The EBU said that even if the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 took place in the UK, Ukraine’s victory this year “would be reflected in next year’s concerts. This will be a priority for us in our discussions with the final hosts. ”
The Eurovision Song Contest, a live event that is broadcast simultaneously in multiple languages across Europe and the world, is an incredibly challenging television production. Before deciding to host the 2023 competition in Ukraine, the EBU carried out a thorough assessment and feasibility study with Ukrainian public broadcaster UA:PBC and external experts, including on safety and security issues.
