It doesn’t take long for the man to fall in love with her and leave do everything to seduce her. As a good sociopath that he is, he indulges in lies and manipulation, despite being sincerely in love with her. But the closer he gets to her, the more he risks her discovering the truth. And so is she very close to episode 2.

A sequence shot with reference to Robert Zemeckis

After spending the evening together, Berlin and Camille meet again the next day when the young woman leaves unexpectedly in front of the robber’s hotel room (26 minutes into episode 2). The latter obviously can’t let her in, as the room is full of devices pointed towards her house to observe her. Then he pretends that he doesn’t want a simple relationship with her, and he rejects her on the pretext that she is married. But immediately after closing the door, he changes his mind and goes to find Camille.

In a beautiful shot, we see it walk down the corridor before the camera revealed that it actually was his reflection in a mirror, when he kisses Camille in the elevator. A shot that must surely have made viewers tremble, given that we have already seen the same process in a much more impressive way Roberto Zemeckis. He is in fact the director who made many viewers turn their heads Contact (1997) and its famous “mirror sequence”.

In it we see a young Jenna Malone who, after discovering that her father is unconscious, runs upstairs in her house to the bathroom. The sequence goes in slow motion and in the final moments we discover that the image was from the medicine cabinet mirror. An ingenious plan that we never get tired of, even when we know the technique used to implement it.

In any case, the reference of Berlin to Zemeckis’ film is rather obvious, even if completely gratuitous. The series is available on Netflix.
