One of the biggest voices in the golf media says he is leaving the broadcast booth. Nick Faldo, a prominent former professional golfer who has been a top golf analyst for CBS Sports and the Golf Channel for more than 15 years, announced his decision in an open letter on Tuesday.
CBS says Trevor Imelman, a former South African teacher who began broadcasting golf with Turner Sports in 2017 and joined CBS in 2019, will replace him at the broadcast tower with CBS golf editor Jim Nantz. Faldo’s final booth appearance will be at the Wyndham Championship on August 7, with Imelman leading the Farmers Insurance Open for the 2023 season.
Faldo wrote in his open letter that he made the decision to retire earlier this year and informed CBS Sports boss Sean McManus of his decision to have breakfast at Pebble Beach.
“Sir Nick has had a fantastic career in television for nearly 20 years and is one of the most successful commentators to ever sit in Tower 18,” McManus said in a statement. “Nick brought to our stations the same passion and dedication that made him the number one golfer in the world. He has combined his deep golf knowledge with his wit and charm, enlightening viewers and enhancing our coverage. We appreciate your outstanding contribution and dedication to CBS Sports. “While his voice will be missed on the air, we wish him all the best as he continues to make a positive impact on golf around the world.”
As for Imelman, McManus says he brings “a unique perspective and insight into today’s stars who have just competed with them.”
“Trevor has developed excellent chemistry and relationships with our entire team, and we look forward to sharing his insights as we inform and entertain viewers for years to come.”
PGA Tour coverage on CBS is the highest level of golf coverage in the world due to coverage of the Masters and PGA championships. The network has hosted PGA events since 1970 and has been home to the Masters Tournament since 1956.
On ABC and later on the NBCUniversal Golf Channel, Faldo was frequently paired with NBC Sports host Mike Tirico, who said in a statement:
“Nick’s quick wit and British curiosity, his passion for golf and his knowledge have entertained us a lot over the last 18 years,” he added. “Personally, I am very grateful for the opportunity to sit next to Nick on different networks for years, but I now consider him a friend. Bravo Sir Nick, and rejoice to enjoy the adventures of the future.
Faldo added in his letter that decades later on the road, first as a player and then as an announcer, he decided it was time to settle down.
“The big mileage implies I’ve been on the road since I was 18 and I’ll be 65 in July. “There are many airports, hotel rooms and restaurant dishes,” Faldo wrote in the letter. “Social media memes and TikTok now give us 101 Buddha quotes like ‘The mistake you make is thinking you have time’ and other wisdom in life, which is great advice to remind everyone not to waste a second . And spend more time with the people we love.”
Faldo, who says he and his family have moved to Montana, where they are developing a farm. He plans to continue working through his charitable foundation, which promotes the junior and amateur golf and golf course design business.
