The Snow Circle: the shocking Netflix film based on a true story
After describing a first humanitarian disaster in the film The impossiblewhich dealt with the devastating tsunami that devastated part of the Indian Ocean in 2004, Spanish director JA Bayona returns to disaster films this year with The snow circle. Arriving on Netflix on January 4, this film (which did not leave first place in the top 10 of the most watched films) transcribed with almost documentary realism the crash of Flight 571 into a glacier in the Andes in October 1972.
With 40 passengers and five crew members on board, the small plane that took off from Montevideo in Uruguay crashed in a remote location high in the mountains before reaching its destination, Santiago, Chile. 12 people lost their lives in the crash, while the other 33 (members of a Uruguayan rugby team) had no choice but to hide in what remained of the plane to protect themselves from the cold and wind. After 72 days of interminable waiting, sixteen survivors were finally rescued. To survive, they had no choice but to resort to survival cannibalism.
Explanation of the footage of the accident
As in The impossible, with the huge wave hitting the hotel, JA Bayona wanted to realistically transcribe the crash of the Uruguayan Air Force Fairchild FH-227 in the Andes. In a video that highlights the making of the film The snow circleNetflix has shared behind the scenes of these impressive shots. Production designer Alain Bainée describes how they shot the accident scene.
To realistically capture the different phases of the accident, three replicas of the aircraft were built. Each of these aftershocks served a specific purpose for accident reconstruction.
The first aircraft built was a complete replica mounted on a gimbal. This innovative structure made it possible to simulate the vibrations and turbulence that the plane would have suffered shortly before the accident. This technique allowed the actors to have an immersive experience, giving them a more realistic feel of what the passengers would experience during these terrifying moments. When we witness the impressive scene of the plane’s tail detachment, which led to the ejection of several passengers, the actors were attached to cables that ejected them from the plane.
Then, smaller portions of the plane were used for specific shots, particularly those showing the immediate aftermath of the crash. These sections have been designed to allow close-ups of the characters’ injuries and moments of intense panic. For example, for scenes showing a character with a broken leg or chairs overlapping upon impact, these smaller segments were essential. They gave the filmmakers the flexibility to capture the harrowing details of the accident without compromising the actors’ safety.
The goal was to have less use of digital special effectsto completely immerse the viewer in the film.
