Scream: a saga in turmoil
The saga He shouted, debuted in 1996, has established itself as a mainstay of the slasher genre in horror cinema. Directed by the late Wes Craven and written by Kevin Williamson, the series is known for its ability to reinvent genre conventions while paying homage to its roots.
The first film was a revolution in the world of horror cinema. It told the story of Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), a high school student who faces a series of brutal murders in her quiet town. The killer, known as Ghostface, used terrifying phone calls and references to classic horror films to stalk his victims. He shouted stood out for its clever blend of terror, dark humor and metacommentary on horror films.
After the success of the feature film, two more sequels followed in 1997 and 2000 which formed a first trilogy.
The saga He shouted it was then rebooted for the first time in 2011 with Screams 4again directed by Wes Craven, which marked Sidney’s return to Woodsboro, eleven years after facing Ghostface one last time. Then, the saga underwent another reboot in 2022 with a fifth film, directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, it should launch a new trilogy. This reboot mixed the stars of the original trilogy (Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and David Arquette) with new faces (Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Jack Quaid).
With a budget of only 24 million, the film grossed almost 138 in theaters. A success which therefore gave rise to a sixth film He shouted, released in March 2023. But for the first time, Neve Campbell did not reprise her role as Sidney Prescott, due to differences with the production. She felt that the salary she had been offered was too low compared to what she had brought to the saga over more than twenty years.
Despite this notable absence, Scream VI still grossed $169 million worldwide. A seventh film was quickly announced by Paramount. But the project went haywire after Melissa Barrera was fired following her comments on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Jenna Ortega also jumped ship, due to scheduling conflicts, and Christopher Landon, the director who was supposed to helm this Scream 7, also left the project.
A glimmer of hope coming from Neve Campbell?
While all the lights seemed red for this seventh part of the saga He shoutedNeve Campbell recently said Variety who could return to the saga “under certain conditions”. If you didn’t specify which ones, we imagine that you are referring to the salary that will be offered to you if her return were to materialize (and given the current state of the saga, it would be a lifeline for the studio).
Neve Campbell hopes for the saga He shouted Will continue, although he agrees that things currently seem complicated :
These films mean a lot to us and they mean a lot to the fans too. Sometimes I go to these conventions and meet the fans, and they go crazy for these movies. They love them. These films mean a lot to them and these characters are very dear to them. So for them too, I would really like to see the series continue
he confided.
