Titanic: Kate Winslet absent from the film premiere
On December 14, 1997, the world of cinema was in turmoil: it was in fact that day that James Cameron presented his film in front of an audience of stars Titanicduring the world premiere in Los Angeles. The beginning of a magnificent storywhich would have a profound impact not only on the world of cinema, but also on global popular culture.
The film not only broke box office records, becoming the first feature film to surpass the symbolic billion dollar threshold, but also won a shower of awards. At the 1998 Oscars, Titanic dominated the ceremony with 14 nominations and won 11 statuettesequaling the record held by Ben Hur (since it also corresponds to The return of the king).
The soundtrack, and in particular the song “My Heart Will Go On” performed by Céline Dion, became a worldwide hit, further contributing to the film’s immense popularity. Titanic it is still the most watched film of all time in France, with more than 21 million viewers.
And while the world premiere of the film in Los Angeles was supposed to be a great celebration for the entire crew, one important absence was noticed: that of Kate Winslet, the interpreter of Rose.
A sad reason
If Kate Winslet hadn’t attended the world premiere of Titanic in Los Angeles, is that he chose to attend a more tragic event in the same period: the funeral of his ex-partner Stephen Tredre in England, he died of cancer at the age of 34.
While the producers of James Cameron’s film had insisted that the actress be present at the premiere, they preferred to pay a final tribute to the man with whom she had spent more than four years of her life. In 1999, during an interview given to The Guardianshe returned to this tragic event and the pressure that the studio had put on her:
Someone who I had spent four and a half years of my life with had just died, and what bothered me was that people would take notice… They would talk to me, they would say things like, ‘Look, we understand, it must be really hard for you’ and then they continued: ‘but don’t you think Stephen would have wanted it?’ (…) No, he wouldn’t have wanted it, damn it. Stephen would have wanted me to be present at his funeral, and I will be there.” I was really shocked by it (…)
said Kate Winslet.
