Everything except you : not here romcom hoped
A genre often overlooked by critics, the romantic comedy has nevertheless provided some gems in the past. Cary Grant or Audrey Hepburn wore some beautiful ones in the 50s and 60s (as a pair, especially in Charade). There was the Julia Roberts phenomenon of the 90s, with cult films like Love at first sight in Notting Hill (1999). While Cameron Diaz has also shown that she is quite comfortable in this genre. Nevertheless, THE romantic comedies notable ones are currently rare. While there are a large number of films of this genre on streaming platforms, the result is rarely up to par. So there was a lot of hope Everything except youwhich marks the return of Will Gluck (Easy one, Sex between friends) to the romantic comedy.

On paper the promise is beautiful. Uniting two beautiful faces, Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) and Glen Powell (Top Gun: nonconformist), whose popularity continues to rise, and has them playing a fake couple who hate each other. Here they play Bea and Ben who, following a misunderstanding after their first date, are unable to hear each other. Years after the meeting, they will be gathered for the wedding of Bea’s sister with Ben’s best friend. Then go to Australia for preparations. But seeing that their mutual hatred threatens to damage the marriage, they decide to do it pretending to be a fake couple. This way Bea will be calmer with her parents who want her to get back with her ex. And Ben will manage to make his ex-girlfriend, who is also present, jealous.
In known territory
With this unoriginal speech, Everything except you meets the needs of romantic comedy, with the expected twists and turns. The recipe is quite mastered, and allows the film to easily place itself above the disastrous productions that abound on streaming platforms. Unless this remains insufficient for an audience with a minimum of knowledge of the genre. An audience that would have seen certain classics, and especially those that lean more towards comedy what a romance.
Because that’s what Will Gluck is trying to do. But the director ofEasy one stay too cold. It’s not enough to show a young topless woman in the distance or a penis in your hand to act irreverently. Especially when, at the same time, vague conflicts between generations are there to remind us that times have changed and that now we need to be more respectful.

Anyone who has seen Maria at all costs (1998) or Serial partiers (2005), two films we think ahead Everything except you, you will not be surprised by this proposal. Believing that the director limits himself at all levels and is satisfied with the minimum to get home in the category Rated R (prohibited for minors under 17 years of age unaccompanied by an adult), an excellent promotional tool for the American market.
A duo that was ultimately too wise
The problem of Everything except you As soon as the absence of spice, irony and self-irony. Like the two heroes, falsely ridiculed and without real guilt. As for Ben, despite his athletic physique, he can’t swim very well. We smile, at best, in the face of this revelation. Also, are the talented Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell choices perhaps too clean suitable for a romantic comedy that wants to break away from clichés a bit. The same sympathy does not emerge from them as from the names mentioned previously – to which we will add, for fun, Rachel McAdams.
The two performers appear here like real dolls. A Barbie and a Ken with wonderful and perfectly smooth bodies. A directorial and production choice, rather than a problem of the actors. As the first images ofHitmanwith a much more surprising Glen Powell. What if the real romantic comedy we wanted was this action thriller about a hitman who meets Adria Arjona? In any case, this is the Richard Linklater film we’ve been waiting for.
