A truly impressive sequence
This is one of the most anticipated moments of the film. Dune 2THE February 28, 2024 in theaters, and we may already have one extraordinary intuition. On Arrakis, Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet) must find his place within the Fremen, and even better confirm his status as a prophet. To do this he will have to tame a Shai-Hulud, or one of these gigantic sandworms that populate the planet.
In Dune, their presence had been fleeting, mostly suggested. We will thus be able to witness a dazzling attack by a worm on a device for extracting the famous spice, a very rapid face-to-face between a worm and Paul Atréides, and finally a vision at the end of the film which shows a Fremen in command of a Shai -Hulud.
But with these few images it was difficult to see their true power and gigantism. This is done with this excerpt (under), where we discover Paul “summoning” one of these creatures by pulsating the sand, and managing to ride it. Much to the relief and admiration of the Fremen Stilgar (Javier Bardem) and Shani (Zendaya).
An extraordinary game of ladders
It was one thing to build formidable paintings in which the characters Dune it appeared tiny in the brutalist architecture of Arrakeen, capital of Arrakis. A production in which Denis Villeneuve succeeded in his challenge to gigantism, but there is also another thing to put this gigantism in movementin the desert, with a creature: the Shai-Hulud.
In this short excerpt from Dune 2 where we see the hero, transported by the sandworm as if by the music of Hans Zimmer, take the reins of the animal like those of his destiny, the effect works wonderfully, we are already trembling. An ideal appetizer, which suggests the show on the big cinema screen, and a fortiori in IMAX, as Christopher Nolan said, you have to prepare for “unique images“.
