The Ashes on Netflix: how to interpret the ending of the romantic drama?

The ashesa new Turkish romantic drama on Netflix

Netflix has added to its catalog The ashes, a Turkish romantic drama brought forward by the beautiful duo Funda Eryiğit and Alperen Duymaz. The story follows Gökçe, a woman who one day discovers a mysterious manuscript titled Ashes (Kül in VO). The novel chronicles the passionate relationship between the opera’s heroine and a man named Mr. Gökçe who quickly becomes passionate about this story, especially because her monotonous life with her rich husband no longer suits her.

Intrigued by this story, Gökçe decides to follow in the footsteps of the heroine of the novel who describes his meeting with M in the Balat neighborhood. Gökçe continues his investigations and ends up running into the man from the manuscript. It doesn’t take long for her to fall under his spell and start a relationship.

The ashes on paper it’s all classic romance, but at the same time an interesting concept mixes the fiction of the book and the reality of Gökçe. Furthermore, we quickly become fond of this discreet woman. But it is in the final moments that the film reveals itself to be most original. An ending that questions and opens up an unexpected path.

How does the film end?

In the last act of the film The ashes, we learn that Metin (the M in the novel) was married before meeting Gökçe. But don’t do it Duygu (the author of the novel), to his sister Reyhan. At least that’s what she says when Kenan, Gökçe’s husband, arranges a confrontation with his wife and her lover. According to Metin, Duygu was obsessed with him. He made numerous suicide attempts before writing lies in the book. He therefore believes that he is not responsible for his death.

For his part, Gökçe no longer reacts. She is in shock, while her husband explains that she is affected by phytophilia. She would then fall in love with the character of M in the book. But now she is unable to distinguish between real life and fiction. To put an end to this, Kenan burns the book before Metin attacks him. The two men argue up to the pool, under the eyes of Gökçe who remains inactive, also seeing as Metin is the only one to emerge. The ashes he could have stopped there. But a final turning point arrives immediately. We find indeed Taner Alpar (Yıldıray Şahinler). The author, introduced at the beginning of the film during Gökçe and Kenan’s wedding anniversary, attends a conference for his new book. This carries the Ashes title.

What if it’s all just an act?

Taner then asks his audience (and the viewer of the film): what is reality and what is fiction? In other words, what if our reality was false and we were living in someone else’s imagination? One way to make it clear what the viewer saw was wronga fiction of Taner’s novel. This is the first hypothesis that the film wants to direct us towards.

Only we learn that, in Taner’s work, his heroine commits suicide. He throws himself under a train, in homage to the character of Anna Karenina in Leo Tolstoy’s novel. The last shot of The ashes shows Gökçe with his son in front of passing trains. One might therefore think that he is preparing to commit suicide. It’s a possibility. If the viewer decides Gökçe is a fictional character from Taner’s novel. However, a second hypothesis seems more interesting.

At the beginning of the film, Lenan told Taner that he should stop writing about him. This is precisely the phrase that Taner uses again during the conference, claiming to have put himself in someone else’s shoes this time. We imagine it what happened in Gökçe was realthat it really exists and that Taner just did it draw inspiration from these events to write his novel. We believe that the latest plan goes in this direction. Because Gökçe is not alone in front of the trains, but with her son.

It’s hard to imagine him committing suicide in these conditions. Especially since the presence of a child is not mentioned during Taner’s lecture. Instead of this fiction, the real Gökçe would then take a train to start a new life. Without her late husband and without Metin, obviously after everything that happened. An even more optimistic view of Gökçe’s suicide. It’s up to the viewer to choose.
