It was Katherine Kubler, an Ivy Ridge survivor, who directed The program for Netflix. She said:
I made this series because there was really nothing that could help explain what happened to me to my friends and family to warn them about these places. Now this resource exists.
To do this, she returned to now-disused campus locations with former classmates to reveal their terrifying experiences. Their stories are marked by serious psychological abuse, such as the obligation to keep toilet doors open or the ban on communicating with each other. They also confess to serious abuse, such as searches on arrival and inhumane treatment in a room without cameras, where staff could brutalize teenagers without fear of being filmed.
The series highlights the story of Katherine Kubler, kidnapped from high school and forcibly taken to Ivy Ridge, as well as the false promises of a normal education conveyed by the school’s well-oiled marketing brochures.
Hundreds of unregulated establishments
The documentary also highlights the institute’s lack of academic credibility, which was neither accredited nor certified by the New York State Department of Education, rendering its diplomas useless.
The program tackles the larger issue of America’s troubled teen industry and does more than simply expose the abuse suffered at Ivy Ridge. So we are also aiming for dismantling the larger industry of problematic teen programming.
Through her testimony, Katherine Kubler intends to raise public awareness on this issue and hopes that the American government will take action. She discusses the existence of hundreds of unregulated facilities similar to Ivy Ridge and the need to find alternative solutions for families in crisis.
The documentary is widely talked about in the United States and many media outlets have reported this story.
