Literature enthusiasts will surely have grasped the connection between Yvan Attal’s film and the novel by Karine Tuilpublished in 2019. Human things is based on the book of the same name, but with notable changes carried out by the director. In this regard, Yvan Attal provided details in the film’s press kit:

I changed the structure of the story – there is “he”, then “she” and finally the trial – so that the viewer takes the time to become attached to them. I wanted to know where they came from, who they were, how everyone had perceived the evening before the tragedy, why she felt there had been a rape and why she believed she had given consent.

A piece of news at the origin of the novel

It was shortly after the book’s release that Yvan Attal became interested in this story. Shocked by this story, the director”totally identified with the parents of the two young people involved in this newsBecause the origin of Karine Tuil’s novel is in fact there a real deal. It is on a Stanford campus in the United States that Brock Turnera student, was accused of raped a 23 year old womanbehind a rubbish bin, when it was unconscious.

The events occurred on January 18, 2015 and the young man was immediately arrested and reported. Found guilty in March of that year, Brock Turner was subsequently sentenced on June 2. While him risked seven years in prisonJudge Aaron Persky sentenced him only to six months. “This is where the scandal really begins“, he wrote Radio France reporting this issue.

According to Judge Persky a heavy prison sentence would have”too severe an impact on Brock Turner“while, according to him, the young man did not represent”no danger to societyFollowing this decision, and the lack of consideration for the victim, an appeal was launched calling for the dismissal of Judge Persky: “More than half a million signatures. Added to this is a letter from the young man’s father in which he explains that his son’s life was ruined due to “twenty short minutes of action”“.

Represent an entire system

For her part, the victim (presented under the name Emily Doe to remain anonymous, she later revealed her identity, Chanel Miller, after publishing a book about this story in 2019), spoke openly in a letter. She told everything the exhausting process that he had experienced, especially in hospital, what Human things represents judiciously. Here is an excerpt of the text he sent from Radio France :

After a few hours in the hospital, I was finally allowed to shower and I realized I didn’t want my body anymore. I was sort of terrified of him. I didn’t know what had been put in it, if he had been contaminated, or even who had touched him. I wanted to get rid of him like you take off an item of clothing and leave it in the hospital with the rest.

Karine Tuil was therefore inspired by this story, which was widely reported by the American media at the time. The author had discussed the case with lawyers before participating trial for rape at the Paris Assizes. For his part, Yvan Attal also met with judges, police officers and lawyers to “understand as closely as possible their field of action, their conception of the professionBecause as he specifies in the press kit, even if the novel gave it to him”beautiful dramatic material“He needed”(immerse yourself) in the system, the arena in which everyone evolves“.

Finally, to bring Mila to life on the screen, Suzanne Jouannet also studied testimonies, watched video excerpts of trials filmed in the United States and read the victim’s letter by Brock Turnerseeing it as a testimony”rich, deep and very touching“.
