Mektoub, my love : due song ready soon
Abdellatif Kechiche is a filmmaker as prestigious as he is controversial, with unique films that consistently cause a stir. Especially in what we could define as the second part of his filmography, that of 2013 and the great success Adele ‘s life, Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. After this success, which Adèle Exarchopoulos reveals, that is in difficulty Mektoub, My Love: canto one is produced and filmed. In this sublime film, released in 2017 and another great critical success, Abdellatif Kechiche pushes his naturalistic cinema to the extremes and draws on the banality of relationships between young adults extraordinary light and vitality.
Mektoub, My Love: canto one was expected at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. But there was a cheat on the production contract: Abdellatif Kechiche actually produced a double cut, two films instead of just one, initially titled The die is cast AND Pray for Jack – he distances himself from it and the film is finally in competition at the Venice Film Festival 2017. But the story of Cannes resumes two years later, when Abdellatif Kechiche presents in competition at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo. A 3.5 hour experimental film shot entirely in a nightclub, sometimes bordering on pornography, and shown in an unfinished edit. The director admitted that he had “wrong” at the Paris Match in October 2022.
I made a mistake in presenting “Intermezzo” at Cannes. The film wasn’t finished, it wasn’t mixed, it wasn’t completely corrected. But I was so excited about introducing young actors and actresses, especially Roméo De Lacour, that I went. And then I got involved in the festival.
A (peaceful) return to Cannes?
Mektoub, My Love: Intermezzo caused a scandal during its screening on the Croisette. And in the end it was never released in theaters. Abdellatif Kechiche doesn’t want to show it, and if he ever does, it won’t be before the release of Mektoub, My Love: canto twothe “true sequel” to Mektoub, My Love: canto one and therefore the second part of his “human comedy”. And this might be released soon…
In the same interview given to Paris Match in 2022, Abdellatif Kechiche then explained that he is currently working the assembly of Mektoub, My Love: canto two AND Mektoub, My Love: canto three. And just under two years later, currently inside post production according to IMDB, there are rumors behind the scenes of French cinema that Mektoub, My Love: canto two could thus, seven years after the screening of the first film in Venice, be presented at Cannes Film Festival 2024 or to Venice Film Festival 2024.
At the moment we know almost nothing about this sequel, apart from the fact that we find the cast of the first Mektoub, my love, namely Ophélie Bau, Shaïn Boumedine, Salim Kechiouche, Hafsia Herzi and Lou Luttiau. Which would tend to be confirmed after the scandal Interlude and an apparent break in the collaboration between Ophélie Bau and Abdellatif Kechiche, of which the images Mektoub, My love: song two were shot at the same time as the first film andInterlude, between September 2016 and September 2017 in the Sète region. Therefore, the editorial staff of this second official part – Interlude being presented as a interlude apart from -, it would a priori be finished or in the finalization phase. And the film could then take the direction of the 2024 edition of the Cannes Film Festival…
