Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom: more Transformers than ever

Godzilla x Kong : a fifth work for the MonsterVerse

Since the release of Godzilla in 2014, Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse has changed a lot. Not in principle, since the films that followed (Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters AND Godzilla vs. Kong) have always staged giant monsters fighting each other to Earth and destroy entire cities in the process. But rather in tone. In the course of feature films, the humor became more and more pronounced, and increasingly crude superiority (as with Mechagodzilla). Which now brings the MonsterVerse closer to the saga transformers compared to the latest Japanese productions – like Godzilla minus one who was able to convince with his tragic tone.

Without surprise, Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom so continue on this path mindless success as Hollywood too often serves us, with ever so little reflection on our world. For example, the ecological theme is more than ever put aside in favor of the big show. And the question of the impact of colonization on indigenous populations (here the Iwi) is reduced to two lines of dialogue, then set aside by a joke. Adam Wingard, who will return to direct next Godzilla vs. Kongtherefore wishes to favor lightness and entertaining the gallery even in its action sequences. Like Kong using a child of his species to hit his peers without any remorse. A hilarious Nanardesque passage, which surprisingly works.

Action and emotion

Because once you accept the great absurdity assumed by Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom, we are in fact caught in the game of this kind of senseless and regressive passages. This is where the director also shows a little innovation with his camera, such as using the weightlessness to take the viewer in all directions while his monsters hit each other. Furthermore, even if everything is not visually level, everything turns out to be more readable and appreciable than what some important productions have recently offered. At the same time, it would have been difficult to do worse than The flash OR The wonderstwo superhero blockbusters made up of horrific digital effects.

Except for its grueling ending, Godzilla x Kong: The New Kingdom so it has these great fights for itself, which are fun for fans of the genre. Unfortunately, the film drags on too long before it gets to that point. For long minutes we follow Dr. Ilenne Adrews (Rebecca Hall) as she explores the Hollow Earth with her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle) and two fun people on duty, Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry) and Trapper (Dan Stevens). We would have done without the latter, especially since the mother and daughter are enough to excite the film. An appreciable emotion, which also comes from Kong and his ability to communicate. For this emotional aspect, the film has the intelligence to insist on the giant ape, but it must in return minimize Godzilla’s presence. A choice that could displease someone who, based on the title, expected greater collaboration between the two titans.
