Asterix and Obelix arrive on StudioCanal
The work of Albert Uderzo and René Goscinny will continue to be exported to cinema. After Asterix and Obelix against Caesar (1999), Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002), Asterix at the Olympic Games (2008), Asterix and Obelix: In His Majesty’s Service (2012) e Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (2023), a sixth live action film was just announced. One might have thought that after the critical failure, very negative audience feedback and disappointing box office of Guillaume Canet’s Asterix, the famous Gaul would not return to the screens immediately. Not to mention the announcement, during a StudioCanal press conference, of the production of an upcoming film.
Maxime Saada, chairman of the board of directors of the Canal+ group and president of StudioCanal, announced the creation of a new label: StudioCanal Stories. A label dedicated to literary adaptations in films and series, and of which the next Asterix would be the first project. A real novelty since the previous films had been produced by Pathé.
Now or never for Philippe Lacheau?
We still don’t know who will be responsible for this next adaptationAsterix and Obelix. However, if StudioCanal is involved, it’s hard not to think about it Philippe Lacheau. The director has collaborated with the studio several times and has always enjoyed great success. His Superhero in spite of himself (2022) had in fact collected almost 2 million viewers, whileAlibi.com (2017) e Alibi.com 2 (2023) had respectively accumulated 3.5 and 4.2 million entries. Moreover, Alibi.com 2 had been the main competitor ofAsterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom as it was released at the same time. And already, in February 2023, there was talk of the possibility of seeing Lacheau in front of and behind the camera for an adaptation of Asterix.
For the moment this remains a simple hypothesis. Philippe Lacheau is currently employed by another comic adaptation with the Marsupilami. StudioCanal should soon provide details on this next Asterix film and then officially announce who will be in charge of directing it. Until then we can find the Rooster in animation, with Alain Chabat’s series for Netflix: Asterix and Obelix: battle between leaderswhich will premiere at the Annecy festival on June 11th.
